I have to deal with dogs a lot, and believe me, I’ve seen it all. Everything from 120-pound big-ass dumb dogs to feisty mini poodles that scream like they’re being hurt when you grab them by the collar and try to get them inside the house.
My point is: TRAIN YOUR DOGS.
Of course, bigger dogs (or the ill-term aggressive breeds) HAVE to be thoroughly trained because if they aren’t, they can maim or kill a human being.
People forget all about their small dogs, and let them run free without any type of discipline. No dog should snarl at you, act like he’s being hurt when he doesn’t get his way, nor bite you. But just because they’re small “and cute” they don’t get scolded.
In my personal experience, small dogs’ behaviors are even worse than bigger ones. Not to mention higher levels of anxiety and aggression.
“If he’s not behaving or following your instructions, just give him treats. He’ll calm down afterwards.”
Well, that’s not the way it works. You’re actually teaching him how to get whatever he wants and get rewarded when he misbehaves.
I can’t stress this enough:
Train your pet, discipline it.
Just because he’s small, doesn’t mean he can get away with everything. Even if he fits on your bag or purse, he needs to be disciplined. Teach him how to be a dog, a well-mannered dog.
